Our Story

Welcome to Roots of Liberty Farm! Here, we specialize in small breed, grassfed, family-friendly animals that are perfect for small farms and homesteads. Our compact, dual-purpose cattle provide both high-quality milk and flavorful beef, making them an excellent choice for sustainability. With their gentle nature and efficient grazing habits, they are easy to manage, ideal for first-time cattle owners.

We proudly raise hardy and friendly small sheep from the Shetland Islands. These sheep are cherished for their incredibly soft and versatile wool.  We focus on breed conservation while ensuring the health and well-being of our animals through careful management and selective breeding; all rooted in maintaining our traditional heritage.

Our Breeds

Dexter Cattle Key Traits & Temperament:

Originating from the rugged mountains of Ireland, Dexters are the ultimate heritage breed for the modern homestead. Known for their legendary hardiness and "tri-purpose" utility, they provide high-quality beef and rich, creamy milk while serving as efficient, small-scale browsers for pasture management.

  • Size: One of the smallest cattle breeds; mature cows weigh 600–700 lbs and stand 36–42 inches at the hip, while bulls weigh about 1,000 lbs.

  • Adaptability: Exceptionally hardy and resilient; they thrive in various climates and maintain excellent condition on pasture and hay alone.

  • Temperament: Generally docile, intelligent, and curious, making them easy to handle and a favorite for family farms.

  • Dual Purpose: Highly efficient producers of both premium, marbled beef and rich, high-butterfat milk (often A2/A2).

  • Efficiency: Remarkable foragers that require significantly less land and supplemental feed than standard commercial breeds.

  • Ease of Birthing: Renowned for high fertility and strong maternal instincts; small birth weights make calving difficulties extremely rare.

  • Naturally Polled: Our Dexters are genetically hornless (polled), ensuring safety for both the family and the herd.

Aberdeen (Lowline) Angus Cattle Key Traits:

Originating from Scotland, Aberdeen Angus are hardy "easy keepers" renowned for producing high-quality beef on a 100% grass-based diet. Their naturally moderate frame makes them ideal for smaller operations and regenerative grazing.

  • Size: A true moderate-frame breed; mature cows typically stand 39–44 inches at the hip and weigh 800–1,100 lbs, while bulls weigh 1,300–1,600 lbs.

  • Adaptability: Exceptionally hardy and resilient, they thrive in diverse climates and maintain excellent condition on pasture alone.

  • Temperament: Famous for their extremely calm, docile, and manageable nature, making them a favorite for family farms.

  • Dual Purpose: While primarily a superior beef breed, their rich milk and strong maternal instincts ensure fast-growing, healthy calves.

  • Efficiency: Highly feed-efficient; they produce more high-quality beef per acre than standard commercial cattle.

  • Ease of Birthing: Renowned for small birth weights (averaging 45–55 lbs) and high calf vigor, making calving difficulties extremely rare.

  • Naturally Polled: Genetically hornless (polled), which increases safety for handlers and other livestock without the need for dehorning.

Shetland Sheep Key Traits:

Originating from the rugged Shetland Islands of Scotland, these "unimproved" heritage sheep are world-renowned for their fine wool and primitive hardiness. They are a delightful addition to any homestead, offering a charming personality alongside their practical multi-purpose utility.

  • Size: One of the smallest British sheep breeds; rams typically weigh 90–125 lbs, while ewes average 75–100 lbs.

  • Adaptability: Remarkably resilient and thrifty; they have survived for centuries in harsh, windy conditions and thrive even on sparse grazing.

  • Temperament: Calm, intelligent, and famously charming; many are so affectionate they are known to wag their tails when petted.

  • Fiber Excellence: Produces some of the finest, softest wool of any breed, highly prized by hand-spinners for its incredible range of over 30 natural colors and patterns.

  • Ease of Management: Naturally easy lambers with strong maternal instincts; their short, fluke-shaped tails do not require docking. Possess a high level of natural resistance to internal parasites.

  • Premium Meat: Known for a lean, succulent flavor that is mild and tender, making it a favorite for gourmet homestead use.
